Use your own blood to regrow your hair!

Dr. David Mishkin, in conjunction with Chuck Alfieri of Salon Alfieri, have been performing Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy as a proactive therapeutic option for male and female patients experiencing hair loss. PRP is an exciting, non-surgical therapeutic option for patients who require stimulation of hair growth for hair loss conditions.

Patients who are good candidates for PRP injection therapy indicate they are not interested in surgery, want to prevent more hair loss, and are currently experiencing a lot of miniaturized hair. A non-surgical solution for hair restoration, PRP is not a pharmaceutical or a drug, but a Medical Device sanctioned by the FDA for use in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Structurally, PRP is a biomatrix that repairs and remodels damaged tissue.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy for Hair Rejuvenation

In hair restoration, PRP will be injected into the scalp. The application of PRP causes miniaturized hair follicles to become healthier and larger, producing more robust hair growth. PRP activates follicular progenitor cells (adult stem cells) and PRP is loaded with growth factors that promote rapid angiogenesis and localized cell growth. Effective for both male and female pattern hair loss, PRP has also regrown hair in alopecia area, eyebrow hypotrichosis and other patient cases with non-hereditary hair loss.

The recovery from PRP therapy is typically uneventful. Pain is easily managed in most cases with non-narcotic analgesic medication such as Ibuprofen. Some mild swelling of the forehead is occasionally seen 4-6 hours after PRP injections. This is normal and will resolve in 48 hours. Avoiding vigorous activity is recommended until the swelling is gone. There is no other downtime or noticeable effects of the procedure. Patients can wash their hair normally immediately after the injections. 3. An PRP treatment takes about 80 minutes to complete. First, a blood sample is obtained which is specially processed to produce the PRP. A local anesthetic is then administered to completely numb the scalp treatment area. If desired, a sedative can be administered. The PRP are combined and then administered via a series of injections over the full scalp or in a localized treatment area such as the eyebrows or beard.

New hair growth can be seen as early as 2 months, but is typically evident between 5-8 months and will continue to improve up to a year after treatment.

PRP therapy is a versatile tool in the treatment of hair loss for a number of causes including:

  • Male Pattern Hair Loss – especially in the early stages of balding or anytime there is a lot of miniaturized hair on the scalp
  • Female Pattern Hair Loss – at all stages of hair loss
  • Hypotrichosis (fine/reduced hairs) of the eyebrows or beard
  • Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis
  • Metabolic hair loss causes – iron deficiency & medication induced hair loss

Frequently Asked Questions

PRP is Platelet-rich Plasma injections. The patient has blood drawn which is spun down to separate the white blood and red blood cells from the platelets and plasma. The platelets are concentrated to 7-10 times normally found in your blood.
Platelets are a group of proteins that have multiple functions in the body. First function is to coagulate the blood to stop any bleeding. The second function where PRP works is to rebuild and repair the body. Platelets are made up of Growth factors, cytokines and Immunoglobulin’s. These proteins are what stimulates stem cell growth which repairs the body.
Most people are candidates for PRP. People who are actively on chemo therapy or any immune-suppressive drugs, patients with auto immune disorders or hematologic disorders are not candidates.
The good news is that there is no allergic reaction to PRP. We are using the patient’s own blood products. Some people will get swelling at the site of treatment, which is normal due to the nature of platelets first reaction is inflammation before the rebuilding stage starts. This swelling usually lasts 24-48 hrs after treatment.
DHT is the compound that damages the hair follicle. PRP stimulates stem cell growth and the blockage of DHT. This allows the hair follicle to grow thicker stronger hair. The patient must have active hair in the follicle in order to grow. Patients with no hair in the follicle PRP will not improve balding.
One treatment every 3 months for a total three treatments then once a year for maintenance.
Typically hair regrowth takes about 3-4 months after treatment to show thickening of the hair and increase on follicle size.
